In September 2017, The DevOps Agile Skills Association (DASA) hosted DASA Connect, a pan-European conference, in Rotterdam. With 35 participants from 15 countries, all major countries in Europe were represented. It was a busy week for DASA, as it organized a similar event in Asia concurrently.
Participants of the conference included leaders and senior managers from top training providers and specialized consulting organizations across Europe. Continue reading for some discussion highlights from the summit.
1. The Need for DevOps is Growing
There was in-depth discussion on the fact that Traditional IT is facing an increasing need to adapt to or embrace new digital business models. This means more and more organizations are looking to adapt to change by embracing DevOps. Participants agreed that the DevOps movement — accumulating as a result of the shift from mass production to Lean, supported by the rapid advancement of automation and application of agile principles — is helping organizations to address business needs much faster.
2. Team Skill Needs Shifting
Participants discussed how the rise of smaller teams, end-to-end responsible for business capabilities, has changed the competence needs of team members, resulting in traditional IT roles becoming less apparent. This new reality has driven the need for cross-trained professionals who work effectively in a team and together possess all relevant capabilities to take on their work.
3. DASA’s Focus Resonated
The DASA approach to DevOps resonated with the participants. There was discussion around the importance of focusing on a team-based competence approach, and moving away from a role-based approach. Teams can only succeed if they have the right mix of competencies – a mix of more ‘specify and verify’ profiles and ‘create and deliver’ profiles and with all members possessing enough ‘enable and scale’ competencies.
4. Successes Shared via Case Studies
During the summit, several case studies were presented outlining how the DASA team-based model has already been implemented within organizations successfully, providing a strong basis for further growth of DASA DevOps.
DASA is now planning additional Connect events in North America and Asia. If you are interested in participating in or helping to organize a DASA Connect event in your region – send an email to info@devopsagileskills.org.
