I have a bunch of designations, certifications, credits, affiliations; you name it. When I first heard about the DevOps Agile Skills Associations (DASA) in 2016, I got involved because I’m a firm believer in the Agile and DevOps mindset. DASA DevOps and Agile principles go hand in hand; one does not work without the other.
In my opinion, two things are critical for organizations to be successful. The first is that companies need to adopt Agile and DevOps principles, and it is essential to ensure various teams work together closely and in the right spirit. (Dev+Ops, also QA, Business, etc.). The second is; teams need to have the right skills and competences. These skills are not purely Technical or Tools related, as much more is required to transition an organization to the next phase.
About two months ago, I received an invitation to participate in the DASA DevOps Coach program. After reviewing the material, I noticed that it has little to nothing to do with technical knowledge. This intense and unique program provides the participants:
- Extensive understanding and practice of Coaching skills and mindset,
- How they can inspire individuals and their team to serve as a performance and change champion, and
- When and how to switch their styles, depending on the situation, as a consultant, mentor, facilitator, leader, or coach.
In one of the sessions, where we had experts from the U.S., Mexico, and Canada attending, we discussed why organizations are failing to transition to Agile / DevOps. My perspective was the same as many others in the group; organizations are focusing on prescriptive methods, such as SCRUM, SAFe, DA, or other flavors of DevOps. While those methods are the best practice frameworks in the market, it might not be the best one for an organization. To foster true business agility and transformation, every team within an organization needs to find their way of working based on their unique situation.
The DASA DevOps Coach program teaches us how a Coach can enable individuals and teams and support organizations to adopt Agile and DevOps practices. This program inspires me to serve as a performance and change champion in any organization and help them to find their unique way to improve their ROI and increase customer satisfaction. The program has connected me with like-minded DASA community, which helps me serve my customers better.
