Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines are foundational to modern software development, promising speed, efficiency, and reliability in delivering code from development to production. Yet, the prevailing paradigm emphasizes a unidirectional flow—downstream—centered on delivery, often neglecting the critical component of feedback. This keynote addresses the inherent bias in the terminology and practice of CI/CD pipelines, arguing for a paradigm shift towards incorporating upstream feedback mechanisms. By examining the consequences of the downstream focus, including missed opportunities for improvement and the potential for negative impacts on software quality and team morale, the presentation advocates for a more forceful approach. This approach insists on creating feedback loops that inform and enhance development practices, to avoid getting stuck in the First Way of DevOps and instead fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement, pushing for the Third Way.
