Monitor Progress

How Do DevOps Product Owners Actually Monitor Progress?

Posted in

The team and the Product Owner have together understood and confirmed the Product Backlog. They have created the Team Backlog for the next iteration. We know that the Team Backlog consists of more than just new features to be developed. Solving incidents, answering user queries, giving advice, and carrying out operational activities are all examples of activities that consume the team’s precious time. The key question for the team is how do we create a visual representation of the work so that we can monitor its progress?

The team must identify the best way to ensure that all agreed work is done according to what has been agreed with the customer, through the Product Owner. The rest of this section deals with possible visualizations that help the Product Owner and the team to manage their work.

How to monitor the progress of a Backlog item?

  • At any point in time in a Sprint, the total work remaining in the Sprint Backlog can be calculated.
  • The team tracks this total work remaining at least for every Daily Scrum to project the likelihood of achieving the Sprint Goal.
  • By tracking the remaining work throughout the Sprint, the team can manage its progress.
