The autonomy of teams is supported by the ability to operate as independent teams. The way to achieve autonomy through DevOps is by setting up teams (Business System teams) structured around distinct services and products, as shown in the following figure.
The guidance of architects is of great help when setting up teams, such as the one depicted in the figure. They can help boost the performance of all teams. Creating one or more Platform teams who also have their product scope (but the product = the infrastructure products/services they build and maintain) helps alleviate this knowledge/skills in all the other teams who need not care about this anymore. The other (business system teams) can release products and services that run on a high-performance IT runway that platform teams maintain.
